LYNCHBURG, VA., CITY COUNCIL, BETA SIGMA PHI
Beta Sigma Phi International Sorority is primarily a social and cultural organization that
incorporates service as part of its activities. Service projects for the organization are done locally
and internationally and are a tribute to the character of the members. The cultural programs are
important in Beta Sigma Phi and are the basic element of the organization. Through these
programs each member is encouraged to grow personally, while at the same time participating in
the growth of her sisters. The activities are designed to broaden personal knowledge and
understanding of self, friends, and the world. The national organization has also led in support
of scientists in cancer research.
The first chapter of Beta Sigma Phi in Lynchburg was organized in February 1945. With
multiple chapters in the city, the Lynchburg City Council was organized to keep chapters in
touch with each other. Locally, the Council has supported Camp Easter Seal for Crippled
Children, the annual carnival day at Central Virginia Training Center and the neonatal unit at
Virginia Baptist Hospital.
Membership in the Lynchburg City Council is composed of chapters of Beta Sigma Phi
in the City of Lynchburg, to be represented by the incumbent president and two elected
representatives from each of the chapters. The object of the City Council of Beta Sigma Phi is to
advance the aims of Beta Sigma Phi by conducting periodic discussions of its problems and
interests, by sponsoring combined activities, both social and educational, and strengthening the
sisterhood by closer personal contact among members in the various chapters.
