S.H. FRANKLIN, INC.

In 1888, S.H. Franklin established the firm of Franklin, Schenk and Co., specializing in
men’s clothing in Lynchburg, Va. In 1892, S.H. Franklin was partners with Frank W. Flood, in
the firm of Franklin and Flood, clothiers, at 1006 Main St. In 1894, Franklin was partnered with
Lilleous H. Gilliam at the same address. In 1897, S.H. Franklin was established at 921 Main St.
where it continued until around 1900 with a move to its final location at 923 Main St. On Oct. 4,
1930, the firm was incorporated as S.H. Franklin, Inc., with John R. Franklin as President,
Corinne R. Franklin, Vice-President, and J.V. Miller, Secretary-Treasurer. The firm continued
until about 1986.
SAMUEL HOWELL FRANKLIN (1864-1942)
Samuel Howell Franklin was born 21 July 1864, in Pamplin, Appomattox Co., Virginia,
the son of John R. Franklin and Martha Watson. According to some sources, he was educated in
Lynchburg and worked in the tobacco business following completion of his education. By 1888
he established himself as a merchant in Lynchburg, dealing with men’s clothing. He married
Corinne Roach around 1893, probably in Texas, the daughter of John White Roach and Emma
Chambers. S.H. Franklin died 12 March 1942 and buried in Franklin/Thornton Cemetery in
Pamplin, Va.
