JULIET FAUNTLEROY (1871–1955)
Juliet FAUNTLEROY, daughter of Thomas FAUNTLEROY and Mary Anna
DEARING, was born 26 July 1871, at Oakley, the family home in Gloucester County,
Virginia. The family moved to Avoca, near Altavista, in Campbell County, Virginia, in
1878. Educated at the Richmond Female Seminary, Miss FAUNTLEROY was a teacher
in Campbell County for a number of years.
Descended from colonial families, Juliet FAUNTLEROY developed an early
interest in history and genealogy. She compiled a wealth of material concerning the
FAUNTLEROY and allied families, as well as historical material on Campbell County
and the area surrounding her home, Avoca. "By virtue of the fact that she neglected no
opportunity to go to original sources, she became widely recognized as an authority to be
depend on for accuracy, and information was sought from her from other researchers all
over the country." [Obituary, Lynchburg News, 12 October 1955, p. 18, col. 1.]
Miss FAUNTLEROY was a founding member of the Col. Charles Lynch
Chapter, D.A.R., and also served as regent of the chapter. In 1946, she was recognized
by the D.A.R. for her work in the preservation of historical records.
Miss FAUNTLEROY was also a member of the Virginia Folklore Society and
was instrumental in the collection and preservation of ballads sung in Virginia.
Juliet FAUNTLEROY died 11 October 1955 at her home, Avoca, and was buried
in the family cemetery there.
