JAMES BURROUGHS NOELL (1890-1985) PAPERS
The collection includes the business and personal papers of James Burroughs NOELL
of Lynchburg, Virginia. Some business papers predate the business career of James B.
NOELL and involve the legal work of his father, James TURPIN NOELL, Jr., attorney
for the Bonsack Cigarette Machine Company. Also included are miscellaneous
genealogical notes, including the BROWN, PATTESON and OWEN families, and a
biographical sketch of Ambrose Hammett BURROUGHS, attorney for the American
Tobacco Company. The collection also contains notes and correspondence generated in
the writing of "Lynchburg Business Firms of 1900."

JAMES BURROUGHS NOELL (1890-1985)
James Burroughs NOELL, son of James Turpin NOELL, Jr., and Lucy Dudley
WATTS, was born 17 December 1890, in Greensboro, North Carolina. He was
graduated from high school in Lynchburg, Virginia, and was graduated from Washington
and Lee University in Lexington, Virginia, in 1911. He received his law degree from
Harvard Law School in 1917. During World War I, NOELL served as a captain in the
51st Pioneer Infantry Regiment.
Following World War I, James B. NOELL attended the University of Nantes in
France. He also managed the family farm at Lone Pine, Bedford County, Virginia, before
World War II. During World War II, he served in the United States Army once again.
A member and secretary of the Sphex Club of Lynchburg for a number of years,
James B. NOELL contributed many articles of historical interest, including "Asa G.
Candler," "The Bonsack Machine," "English Legal System," and "Lynchburg's
Confederate Generals." He was also a member of the Lynchburg Historical Society and
wrote additional articles for that organization, including "Lynchburg Business Firms
1900."
James Burroughs NOELL died 5 February 1985 and was buried in the Spring Hill
Cemetery in Lynchburg.
