OWEN OWEN, JR. COLLECTION
The collection includes one photograph showing a head-and-shoulders portrait of Second
Lieutenant Owen Owen, Jr., in his U.S. Army uniform. Also included is a certificate of the
awarding of the Purple Heart, dated 23 November 1944, signed by Major General James A. Ulio,
Adjutant General, and Henry T. Stimson, Secretary of War, and a typescript copy of a letter to
Owen’s father dated 23 February 1945 from the infantry commander, Captain Raymond T. Smith,
explaining the circumstances surrounding the death of Lieutenant Owen on 18 September 1944 in
Belgium.
OWEN OWEN, JR. (1924-1944)
Owen Owen, Jr. was born in 1924 in North Carolina, son of Owen Owen, Sr., and Janet E.
England. He entered military service in Georgia, serving in the 502nd Parachute Infantry
Regiment, 101st Airborne Division, as second lieutenant. He was killed in action in Belgium while
leading a group of men through an artillery barrage on 18 September 1944. Owen is buried in the
Netherlands American Cemetery, near Margraten, Netherlands.
