The collection includes newspaper clippings, dated 29 October 1940 – 8 July 1942,
originally mounted into three scrapbooks from the Lynchburg Draft Board, No. 1.

SELECTIVE SERVICE TRAINING AND SERVICE ACT
The first peacetime draft in United States history, the Selective Training and Service Act
of 1940, was instituted 16 September 1940. It required all men between the ages of 21 and 45 to
register for the draft. Following the attack on Pearl Harbor in December 1941, the act was
amended to require the registration of men between the ages of 18 and 64. In actual practice, only
men 17 to 45 were drafted.
