WILLIAM MARVIN BASS AND FAIRVIEW ELEMENTARY SCHOOL COLLECTION
The collection includes correspondence, newspaper clippings, and photographs concerning
the location, restoration and return of a portrait of a Lynchburg educator, William Marvin Bass.
Also included are family genealogical charts and records of the Bass and allied families.
WILLIAM MARVIN BASS (1878-1963)
William Marvin Bass was born 24 January 1878 in Chesterfield County, Virginia, the son
of William Bass and Susie J. Perdue. He was educated at New London Academy in Bedford
County and was a graduate of the University of Virginia. He was a teacher in Virginia schools for
52 years. He became principal of the Fairview Elementary School in Lynchburg, Virginia, in 1907
and continued until his retirement in 1948. Mr. Bass died 30 September 1963 and is buried in Fort
Hill Memorial Park, Lynchburg.
BETTY ANNE WRIGHT SMITH (1934-2021)
Betty Anne Wright was born 25 January 1934 in Lynchburg, Virginia, the daughter of
Arthur Wilson Wright and Hilda Stewart. She graduated from E.C. Glass High School and earned
a Bachelor of Arts and a Master’s Degree in Elementary Education from Lynchburg College. She
retired from the Lynchburg City Public Schools after 25 years of service as a kindergarten teacher.
She was very much involved in genealogy and volunteered at the Jones Memorial Library and the
Old City Cemetery in Lynchburg. She was also a Master Gardner. Betty passed away on 28 April
2021 in Roanoke, Virginia.
