FIFTH WAR LOAN DRIVE SCRAPBOOK
The collection consists of one scrapbook containing newspaper clippings and
photographs concerning the Fifth War Loan Drive held in Lynchburg, Virginia, 6 June-8
July 1944. The scrapbook was probably kept by Lawrence B. WHITEHOUSE, Jr.,
Chairman of the Publicity Committee of the Lynchburg War Finance Committee.
FIFTH WAR LOAN DRIVE
The Fifth War Loan Drive for bond sales was conducted by the Lynchburg War
Finance Committee. The quota for the sale was $4.1 million in bonds, which included
$900,000 from retail establishments, $1.35 million from industry, and $1.85 million from
banks. The original date for the drive to start was 12 June 1944, but the date was
changed to coincide with the European invasion on 6 June 1944. Chairman of the
Lynchburg War Finance Committee was Samuel B. WILLIAMS.
At the conclusion of the bond drive, $3,915,650 had been raised in the City of
Lynchburg. The State allocation was added and the total was $465,650 over the goal.
Series E bond sales, however, were somewhat slow, and the drive was continued into
August. The Women's Division of the Lynchburg War Finance Committee was drafted
to conduct this campaign.
