BURFORD FAMILY MISCELLANEOUS RECORDS (1900-1940)
The collection includes receipts from tax records, various purchases, and other items for
several members of the Burford family. Also included is a genealogical report on the Burford
family prepared by staff of the Jones Memorial Library.
CLIFTON OSCAR BURFORD (1857-1921)
Clifton Oscar Burford was born 23 September 1857 in Campbell County, Virginia, the son
of Lewis C. Burford and Sallie Ann Doss. He owned a farm near Lynchburg, Virginia, which was
annexed into the city in 1908.
Burford married 21 December 1882 in Campbell County, Etta Jane Lipscomb, the daughter
of George Washington Lipscomb and Susan Ann Prudence Stone. They were parents of eleven
children, ten of which survived to adulthood.
Clifton Oscar Burford died 3 May 1921 and was buried in the Presbyterian Cemetery in
Lynchburg.
