LETTER FROM C. ANTHONY TO PAUL JONES, 23 MAY 1832
The letter is from C. Anthony, of Lynchburg, VA, to Paul Jones, 23 May 1832.
Anthony is asking Jones' help in convincing Anthony's son, James, to return home. If
James will not return, the request was that Jones protect and care for him.
CHRISTOPHER ANTHONY (1776-1835)
Christopher Anthony was born in Bedford County, VA, on 6 December 1776. He was
the son of Quaker parents, Christopher and Mary Anthony, who had declared intentions
of marriage at Burleigh Meeting (Black Water Monthly Meeting) on 16 December 1775.
Christopher, the senior, had apparently been married first to Judith, who had died in
1774.
Anthony married Anna Woolston, on 6 August 1803, in Richmond, VA. Anna was
born in January of 1786. She was the daughter of Samuel and Anna Couch. Samuel was
from Philadelphia; Anna, from Mt. Holly, NJ. Mr. & Mrs. Couch emigrated to Virginia
shortly after their marriage and settled in Richmond, where Anna was born. Christopher,
Jr., was dismissed from the Cedar Creek Monthly Meeting for purchasing a slave and
administering oaths as a magistrate in 1808. In February of 1808, Anna Anthony and
infant children, James Couch and Mary Ann, were admitted to South River Monthly
Meeting.
While in Lynchburg, the Anthonys purchased and lived on Lot #140, purchased in
1812 from John Lynch. This lot was where the Anglican Church stood from 1765 until a
fire destroyed it in 1802. The Anthony family lived at this location "on Court House
Hill" until 1831. Both Mr. & Mrs. Anthony were distinguished citizens of Lynchburg.
Christopher Anthony died in Lynchburg, VA, in September of 1835; Anna, in
December of 1854.
