JOHN ROBERTSON (1787-1873)
John Robertson was born 13 April 1787, at "Belfield," the family home in Prince
George County, Virginia, the son of William and Elizabeth Bolling Robertson. He
married Ann Frances Trent in Cumberland County, Virginia, on 26 April 1819. His
brothers Thomas Bolling and Wyndham Robertson were governors; the first, of
Louisiana (1820-24) and the latter, Virginia (1836-37).
John graduated from William & Mary College, studied law, and practiced in
Richmond, Virginia. He became Attorney General of Virginia early in 1819 and served
in both houses of the General Assembly. He also served in the U.S. House of Representatives from 1834-39, was appointed Judge of the 21st Circuit Court of Virginia in
1841, and served as a member of the Virginia Convention of 1861.
Judge John Robertson made his home in his father's residence in Richmond, Virginia,
until August 1861, when it was made available to Sally Tompkins for a hospital during
the Civil War. During the summers and in his final years, Robertson resided at "Mt.
Athos." It was there that he died on 5 July 1873, and was buried in the family cemetery.
