JOHN WARWICK DANIEL (1842-1910)
John Warwick Daniel was born 5 September 1842, in Lynchburg, Virginia. He was
the son of Judge William, Jr. and Sarah A. Warwick Daniel. Mr. Daniel was educated at
the "Old" Lynchburg College and Dr. Gessner Harrison's University School.
Mr. Daniel served in the CSA's Army of Northern Virginia throughout the Civil War
and was wounded four times. One such wound to the hip gave Daniel the nickname of
"The Lame Lion of Lynchburg." He served on the Gen. Early's staff as Major of Cavalry
and as Assistant Adjutant General.
Following the war, he studied law at the University of Virginia, 1865-66, and was
admitted to the bar in 1866. He practiced law in Lynchburg, Virginia. He received the
LL.D. from Washington and Lee in 1883, and also did work at the University of
Michigan in 1887. He was a noted speaker throughout the country and was one of the
chosen speakers for the dedication of the Washington Monument. Many referred to
Daniel as "Virginia's Cicero."
John Warwick Daniel married Julia E. Murrell in 1869. He served as a member of the
Virginia House of Delegates from 1869 to 1872 and in the Senate of Virginia from 1875
to 1881. He ran for Governor of Virginia in 1881 and lost the election. He served in the
49th Congress of the U.S. and was in the U.S. Senate from 1887-1911. He was reelected
for the 1911-1917 term. Senator Daniel died on 29 June 1910.
