E.C. HAMNER, JR., LETTERS; 1900-1901
The collection includes three letters to naval cadet, E.C. Hamner, Jr. One is from
his mother (20 June 1900), one from his sister Sallie (15 June 1900), and the third from
Senator John W. Daniel (4 February 1901). The Hamners lived in Lynchburg, Virginia.
EDWARD CHAMBERS HAMNER, JR. (1880-1952)
Edward Chambers Hamner, Jr. was born on 24 June 1880, the son of Edward
Chambers and Elizabeth White Hamner. He was appointed to the U.S. Naval Academy
in 1897 and graduated in 1901. While on active duty (1904-1927), he graduated from the
Massachusetts Institute of Technology with a Master of Science degree in 1907; he
retired with the rank of commander. Commander Hamner was recalled to active duty in
1939, promoted to the rank of captain, and served throughout World War II. He retired
in 1945, after reaching the age of compulsory retirement.
At the time of Captain Hamner's retirement, the following was written about him:
"Always Captain Hamner's tactfulness was perfection itself. Captain Hamner is an
executive, organizer and administrator, who invariably did the right thing, at the right
time; he was flawless in his choice of subordinates and in his delegation of authority and
responsibility. All his organization knew that his full support at all times was absolutely
sure."
Captain E. C. Hamner, Jr. died 24 May 1952, and was buried in Arlington National
Cemetery.
