RUTHERFOORD, KING AND COMPANY RECORD BOOKS
The collection includes an account book of tobacco sales and purchases for
Rutherfoord , King and Company, 1883-1886. Earlier sales and purchases may be from
King, Walker and Company, the predecessor of Rutherfoord, King and Company. Also
included is a letter press copying book, 1886, indicating tobacco sales to localities in
Virginia and other states.

WILLIAM KING, JR.
William King, Jr., son of William King and Annie Leftwich, was born in
Lynchburg, Va., 11 November 1861. He was associated with the tobacco industry,
beginning his career as a clerk in a tobacco manufacturing concern. In 1883, he
partnered with J. Stewart Walker to form King, Walker, and Company specializing in
plug and smoking tobacco. In 1885, he partnered with Alexander H. Rutherford of
Amelia County to form Rutherfoord, King and Company, leaf tobacco dealers. After
1887, William King, Jr. continued in the tobacco business for more than fifty years,
serving as manager of the Imperial Tobacco Company, Ltd., and as president of the
Lynchburg Tobacco Association. Active in social, church, civic and cultural activities in
Lynchburg, William King, Jr. died 31 October 1942 in Lynchburg and is buried in Spring
Hill Cemetery.

ALEXANDER HAWKSLEY RUTHERFOORD
Alexander Hawksley Rutherfoord, son of Thomas Rutherfoord and Sarah
Winston, was born 30 August 1807 in Richmond, Virginia. In 1850, he was a merchant
in Richmond, and by 1870, he was owner of a large farm in Amelia County, Va. In 1885,
he partnered with William King, Jr., of Lynchburg, to form Rutherfoord, King and
Company. In the Lynchburg city directory for 1885-1886, Rutherfoord’s address is given
as Baltimore, Maryland. He died 6 July 1886 in Baltimore, Maryland and is buried in
Hollywood Cemetery, Richmond, Va.
