JOHN HOLMES KYLE (1901-1984) PAPERS
The papers of Alice J. Aunspaugh KYLE (1868-1964) and her son, John Holmes
KYLE (1901-1984), both of Lynchburg, Virginia, include genealogical material, family
letters and papers, records of the James River and Blue Ridge Chapters of the Daughters
of the American Revolution, the Woman's Club of Lynchburg, and the Virginia
Federation of Women's Clubs. Also included are papers relating to Mrs. KYLE's work
with the Cooperative Education Commission of Virginia (the woman's college
movement). The collection also includes some Civil War letters and some family
photographs.

The papers of Alice J. Aunspaugh KYLE (1868-1964) and her son, John Holmes

ALICE JAMES (AUNSPAUGH) KYLE (1868-1964)
Alice James AUNSPAUGH, the daughter of Robert Tilghman AUNSPAUGH and
Anna Malinda CLAYTOR, was born 3 September 1868, in Bedford County, Virginia.

[Alice James Aunspaugh Kyle and John Holmes Kyle Papers, MS1856, Jones Memorial Library,
Lynchburg, VA (hereinafter Kyle Papers)] She was graduated from the Augusta Female
Seminary, Staunton, Virginia, in 1888. [Alumnae Directory of Mary Baldwin College (Staunton:
Mary Baldwin College, 1930), p. 9.]

Alice James AUNSPAUGH married 23 October 1889, James Roland KYLE,
tobacconist of Lynchburg, Virginia, son of Daniel Washington KYLE and Mary Jane
JONES, of Prince Edward County. [Kyle Papers; Lynchburg Daily Virginian, 24 October 1889, p. 1
col. 3.]

Mrs. KYLE was active in civic and church activities in Lynchburg. She was president of
the Lynchburg Woman's Club in 1906 and, with other clubs in the state, founded the
Virginia Federation of Women's Clubs. She was elected the first president of the
Federation in 1907. [Obituary, Lynchburg News, 6 September 1964, Sect. C, p. 5 col. 1.]
Mrs. KYLE was a champion of equal rights for women, advocating, in 1909, the
establishment of a women's university in Virginia. [Obituary, loc.cit.]
Mrs. KYLE was a member of the Blue Ridge Chapter, Daughters of the American
Revolution, and was regent of the chapter 1918-1920 and 1930-1932. She was also a
charter member of the Lynchburg Garden Club and was a member of the Old Dominion
Chapter, United Daughters of the Confederacy. [Kyle Papers; Obituary, loc.cit.]
Alice James (AUNSPAUGH) KYLE, "Mother KYLE," died 5 September 1964, and
was buried in Spring Hill Cemetery, Lynchburg. [Obituary, loc.cit.]

JOHN HOLMES KYLE (1901-1984)
John Holmes KYLE, son of James Roland KYLE and Alice AUNSPAUGH, was born
22 July 1901, in Lynchburg, Virginia. He graduated from the Virginia Military Institute
in 1923. He served as a Major in the Chemical Warfare Service during World War II. He
was president of the Virginia Laundry Company and of Crutchfield Dry Cleaning and
Dye Works in Lynchburg. [Obituary, Lynchburg News & Daily Advance, 3 June 1984, Sect. B, p. 2
col. 3; Register of Former Cadets, Memorial Edition, Virginia Military Institute (Lexington: The Institute,
1957), p. 136.]

John Holmes KYLE married Henrietta BARKER, daughter of William Carey
BARKER and Margaret APPERSON, of Lynchburg. Mrs. KYLE died 26 November
